      F-Zero 99 is an online multiplayer racing game with battle royale elements developed by Nintendo of America. I was an Associate Concept Artist on a task force of four. I created machine decals as well as upscaled backgrounds and vehicles.

      F-Zero 99 has customizable decals for each of the four machines. I conceptualized and implemented eight decals. The two on the left are examples of my work.

      It was important that each design was legible within the pixel art style, was visually appealing to incentivize players to collect them, and not too distracting overall as F-Zero 99 can be a hectic game.

 

Backgrounds

      Each track consists of a two-layer parallax background that needed to be doubled in resolution while staying consistent with the original art style. I drew the background art for six of the fifteen tracks.

      I also doubled the resolution of the Golden Snail vehicle, an NPC that acts as both an obstacle and a super spark distributor during races. I reanimated the 360° spin for a smoother animation. I did this because a simple upscaling of the sprites would not provide the quality level we required.
